Creative music workshops for schools

I am currently delivering workshops in schools through East Lothian Arts Services.

Notes on a Story (P1-3)

Using instruments that are available in the school, the children explore sounds, rhythms and textures over three 1-hour workshops to help tell a story, learn to read a graphic score and conduct a musical ensemble. These workshops are suitable for both complete beginners and those with some musical experience alike.

Follow-up teaching ideas are provided.

This workshop has cross-curricular themes and involves group work, peer appraisal, literacy, PSD, listening and performance skills.

Strolling on Song (P4-P7)

Over the course of three 2-hour workshops, children learn to write a song that they then put to music, perform and record. The topic can be agreed beforehand with the class teacher. The workshop uses instruments available in the school, but children may also bring in instruments they are already learning to play — electric and acoustic guitars, fiddles, chanters, English horns and trombones have all featured in the past. However, please check at the first workshop for suitability.

Follow-up teaching ideas are provided.

This workshop has cross-curricular themes and involves group work, peer appraisal, literacy, listening and performance skills and ICT.

Instrumental workshops for children and adults

Whistle Along 1: A fun introduction to the tin whistle (P4-7 | Adults)

The tin whistle (also known as the penny whistle) is a simple instrument to learn to play, requires little looking after and can be used to play a wide variety of tunes from Scotland and beyond.

This workshop introduces children to the instrument, how to hold it and play notes, then goes on to teach a few simple tunes. All teaching is by ear and there is no need to know how to read music.

A graphic score for the tunes is provided, along with a fact sheet of follow-up resources.

Whistle Along 2: Play Scottish tunes on the tin whistle (P4-7 | Adults)

The tin whistle (also known as the penny whistle) is a simple instrument to learn to play, requires little looking after and can be used to play a wide variety of tunes from Scotland and beyond.

This workshop focuses on playing Scottish tunes on the whistle and is tailored to those who have already covered the basics. All teaching is by ear and there is no need to know how to read music, although these are developed over the course of the workshops.

A graphic score for the tunes is provided, along with a fact sheet of follow-up resources.

Portobello Flute Group (Adults)

Workshops for adults who play traditional music on the flute are run in the Portobello area of Edinburghs. The focus is on learning new tunes and developing technique. Set in an informal atmosphere, tuition is by ear, music is provided to take away and recording is encouraged. Contact me for details of the next workshop.

Individual Tuition for Traditional Flute and Whistle (all ages)
